VILIMYXIN®(polymyxin B)
VILIMYXIN® for Injection is one of a group of basic polypeptide antibiotics derived from B. polymyxa. VILIMYXIN® is the sulfate salt of Polymyxins B1 and B2. VILIMYXIN® has a bactericidal action against almost all gram-negative bacilli except the Proteus group. Polymyxins increase the permeability of bacterial cell wall membranes. All gram-positive bacteria, fungi, and the gram-negative cocci, N. gonorrhoeae and N. meningitidis, are resistant. VILIMYXIN® is not absorbed from the normal alimentary tract.Clinical particulars:VILIMYXIN® demonstrates efficacy against infections caused by polyresistant gram-negative bacteria. Due to excellent activity against a wide range of gram-negative microorganisms (incl. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumanii) it uses as a drug of choice for the treatment of the following infections caused by susceptible strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa:• infections of the urinary tract• respiratory tract infections (incl. nosocomial pneumonia)• meningitis• bloodstream infection • skin and soft tissue infections and infection of burn woundVilimyxin® may also be used topically and subconjunctivally in the treatment of infections of the eye caused by susceptible strains of Ps. aeruginosa.Vilimyxin® may be indicated in serious infections caused by susceptible strains of the following organisms, when less potentially toxic drugs are ineffective or contraindicated:• Acinetobacter spp.• H influenzae, specifically meningeal infections.• Escherichia coli, specifically urinary tract infections.• Aerobacter aerogenes, specifically bacteremia.• Klebsiella pneumoniae, specifically bacteremia.NOTE: IN MENINGEAL INFECTIONS, POLYMYXIN B SULFATE SHOULD BE ADMINISTERED ONLY BY THE INTRATHECAL ROUTE.Vilimyxin® may use orally in the treatmaent of infections of alimentary tract caused gram-negative enteropathogenic strains of Enterobacteriaceae and for selective decontamination of GIT. Pharmaceutical form: powder, for solution. Each vial contains Polymyxin B Sulfate equivalent to 250,000 r 500,000 polymyxin B units for parenteral or ophthalmic administration.
